Well, IMO 1.8 was the update that modernized the game. Prior to that the game held an unusual charm - it was unpolished and unfinished. 1.8 changed MC, prior the game had been much harder. You need to look at 1.8 from a early beta/alpha user. This update was adding so much. The new terrain looked amazingly smoother than what we had back then, hunger seemed cool, endermen seemed scary, mineshafts, villages, and strongholds added so much.. I do miss the old terrain, if there was one thing I could add to the game, it would be a 1.7.3 terrain generation button in world options.
