There are multiple reasons for me making this thread. I haven't made one in quite some time, because I honestly haven't had much to talk about as of late. With the recent abundance of complaint threads, and list threads, I feel it's time the forum community got something it hasn't had in over a month - A legitimate debate. Not flaming, or arguing, just a full fledged conversation on a topic I've been curious about for quite some time now.

Now-a-days, most people recognize SG1 as one of three things: A nostalgia trip, the first map, or a horrible abomination that needs to be removed from the servers. Very, very few view SG1 as a legitimately good map, the few who like it seem to only enjoy it in moderation, as a taste of nostalgia. I personally, hold it as one of my favorite maps, it features my personal favorite Building-Nature ratio, the best feel, and some of the best gameplay. Many people seem to be put off by the fact that it doesn't feature fancy terraforming, or some kind of creative setting. Several days ago, when someone was complaining about SG1 I asked them why, they responded with:
"its so boring idk why any1 would even make that map. it has like 10 chests."
Which honestly furthered my interest in the reasons behind the forest maps shunning. It also has one of my favorite chest placement schemes, unlike many new maps it doesn't have any of the boring surface chests (excluding corn) or overpowered hot-spots (excluding the boat) The map really makes it so you need to have an eye for spotting chests, because the map doesn't simply hand them away. The main gameplay feature on this map also disappoints many players. A lot of maps right now feel as if they simply try to look good and exciting, they do little to add an areas that
-A. Will create interesting gameplay
-B. Make it challenging to get chests
-C. Create a legitimate aspect of PvE
While admittedly, SG1's interesting fighting areas were few and far between, its chest hiding and challenge level was superb, and remains as one of my favorite PvE maps (With its basic traps, confusing layout, varied environments, and cliffs). Many recent maps with similar features were very much overdone. Map 1 held a consistently varied placement of trees, doing a good job of creating clearings, small points of interest, and tapering off into cliffs and ocean. While now-a-days, maps are unable to successfully pull this off. For example (the recently removed) hungry hills map attempted to do something similar but ended missing the point. They focused to much on the large grand details and seemed to not notice the little and big inconsistencies that ruined the map as a whole. The forest was too thick, lacking many points of interest and variations. The tiny ledges, small houses, and clearings made the SG1 forest interesting to maneuver where as other maps that try to emulate this style are only able to emulate the mass amount of trees.
My point is, many other environment based maps are quite lacking, things like fortress pike, SG3, Hungry hills, and castle Dracula seem to truly miss the punch when it comes to creating a good nature built map. Which kind of brings me to a loosely related point - Breeze island and Insanity cause. They got it right. Perhaps the maps had too much water, and were far too small, but they really did a great job when it comes to these things. Breeze is lacking in structures, but the mountains serve as an interesting place to fight and something good to look at. Insanity cause in particular did well on all fronts, variation in the jungle, good building throughout, good chest placement. I really don't get why that map is unanimously disliked.

Point is, SG1 has good environments for PvP and PvE, the style is great, the details are well done, chest placement is perfect, and it is all around well made. So I really need to know, why do people dislike this map? Feel free to debate amongst yourself, and I'll be sure to join in.
