I'll just increase my monitor brightness. Is that against the rules? I mean it does give an unfair advantage over players with dimmer monitors...

Editing your gamma is against the rules and I'm fairly positive it'll stay that way. What about all the people who don't know how to do it? It's unfair against them. Say there's 2 people, both with very dim monitors, one of them knows about editing gamma, the other one doesn't. The guy who knows how to edit it would have a fairly significant unfair advantage over the other.
Then why isn't Optifine banned? It gives users who know how to install mods an advantage, over people who don't know how, someone with a crappy computer without optifine and someone with a good computer and optifine = huge advantage, not only that but users with optifine can zoom in and see things more clear than other users without optifine, including nametags, a vanilla user cannot see nametags nearly as far than a user with optifine.

Then you can just say that optifine shouldn't be allowed because users with worse computers without optifine would have an even more disadvantage than a user with a decent computer + optifine

I guess that's the problem about gamma, for all we know 50% of the community does it, because the only way people get caught is by screenshots and videos they make.
I agree this should be banable even if you're a youtuber. If you are so dedicated to youtube that you are changing your gamma for your viewers then you should be editing the video to make it more bright instead.
