What is an ALT?

So I entered a game of Survival Games, and there are tons of people with purple names, and dark blue names. The game starts, and I kill one of the purples kill me, then I die. In the chat, everyone starts calling me an alt, and I keep saying that I don' know what it is. They keep accusing me of being an 'alt' and targetting, and acting.

Can someone please explain?

An "alt" is an alternate minecraft account. They must of thought you were a different account of another player, if you have any more questions PM me.
