What makes a 'good' MCSG player?

Honestly, I don't really think that chest routes are a skill. Memorization ain't all that hard.

Actually luck plays a big roll, because the items you get in chest can save you or break you

But knowing the right chests and enough chests normally makes luck pretty useless. So I guess you can have either luck or a good chest route, just like you can have stealth or great PvP skills.

Or you can have 5 flint and steels so you attack them, get a lag spike, run away, then try a flint and steel and miss, then hit them with 3 more when they thought you used yours up. Then you 1 shot them.
