Some people start slower than others - I had the best win/lose ratio for a little while simply because I started off better than pretty much every other user and I'm generally a quick learner. In fact, back when I first joined, Sixzoseven, egrodo, zeejayy, SomeMugger...they were already the best of the best. Somehow, due to my quick learning, I managed to catch up to them and am recognized by many as one of the best along with them. (Although SomeMugger doesn't really play anymore. I doubt I even would have caught up to him otherwise...)
Don't let this discourage you, though - the point of mine I'm making is just that; Zeejayy, I had caught up to, simply because he started off really slow. The others as well didn't start off super quickly. (well, maybe SomeMugger did.) Zeejayy admitted that out of pretty much his first about 100-200 games, he didn't get much more than a win or two (or something like that.) and yet he ended up being number 1 on the leaderboards for quite a while later on. (although not nearly as good as he once was since he doesn't play that often anymore.) Somehow, he did it despite his slow learning, so I'm sure anyone could.
I suggest looking through the strategies section of these forums. There might be some useful starting tips in there for you.
As a side note: How many games do you play a day on average? Those with donor/not much else to do that day (weekends = no school.) can get in a good 50 games a day...I did yesterday.
