"If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all."
-Everyone's mom
Despite the humorous quote at the top, the subject of this thread is actually quite serious. Far too many times I'll find myself looking at posts from other users who typically have very negative messages and overall a poor attitude towards others. Let's be honest, nobody likes negative comments. And in response people are prone to respond back with something snarly. It all goes off from there.
Sometimes you'll see people just being downright rude. You'll typically see this on an opinion thread, and one of the parties (Either the people in favor of the thread maker or someone on the other side) will just say how the idea contrary to theirs is awful, how it should never happen, how people agree with it are idiots, etc. They don't really try to be helpful or look at the idea, and it can just raise tensions. This problem happens far too much.
There's a simple solution to it however: approach everything subtly. Sure, you're not going to agree with everyone, but that doesn't mean you should bash the idea. The way I see it, you should always approach a negative comment with caution. You ARE going to stir up a bit of heat from others, whether you want it or not. But why not deal with it maturely that way you can try your best to avoid that problem? People don't realize it always, but when you're just downright rude or insulting to someone else on a thread it projects your image.
Say someone new is on the forums and they're browsing threads and starting to learn the names. You're a fairly good poster, but you can have a short temper. The new member comes across a thread where you're name calling and saying how you're right. Would you really want that post to be the person's impression of you? (This wasn't the case with anyone with me, but it more then likely has been with other people.)
First impressions count, so treat every post like it's your finest and avoid name calling. Nobody likes it, and you're doing everyone a favor (Including yourself) by not dishing it out. If you don't like an idea, just go on to the next thread. You don't always have to say how an idea is bunk. Overall, it's all common sense, but sometimes this small act doesn't seem quite so common.
