I realise i might be just incredibly stupid but why can i not break any blocks even after the match has started?

Because you arent suppossed to be able to The only blocks you can break are leaves. All the items yoi can get are found in chests

It wouldnt work, people would just escape the arena and it would ruin the whole point.

The only items/blocks you can break are leaves, vines, mushrooms, and grass. You can still open doors and kill mobs just as you regularly would, you just can't break blocks and such. This would mean people getting out of the arena, grief.. and who knows what else.
