I'm pretty sure they chose US for the event because:
-They consider US their highest player base, especially in the competitive community regarding clans and higher up players
-The US network has the highest server quality regarding upgrades and things
-EU has quite a bit more hackers that would interfere with the event, making things more tedious, annoying, and time consuming
-Pattern: This is what they're comfortable with. Almost all events take place here so it's what they're used to.
-Staff locations: Most higher up staff that organize and manage things like this live in US

Instead of having teams apply, you should have individual players apply and randomly select the teams. It'd be much more fun, competitive, and have people meet new people.
