Simple fix - Remove creeper spawning, turn mod difficulty down, I like having the rotten flesh as a sort of iffy food source, skellies for arrows, spiders for.... poison eyes. I liked mobs, they were just overpowered back then.
I still beg to differ also there's sg 3 and other maps like solar frost to deal with.

If difficulty was turned down less mobs would spawn in either, even turning down the max mob amount in those maps would probably be possible.

A lot of nostalgia on the forums lately. Personally I like it better without the mobs. Easier to make chests routes and easier for noobs to play the games. Also if MCSG is supposed to be heavily based off the books, mobs shouldn't spawn. Well not all the time. I like the ideas of Mutts. Perhaps as the games progress more mobs spawn. Slowly leading the players towards each other.

Wanna test that theory? :p (Look at my points in my signature if you don't know what I'm talking about. xD I never thought I'd say it, but Minecraft's combat actually has a lot of depth (Although admittedly not nearly as much as many other games.) and many people I fight that are new generally tend to fight completely differently than veteran users - I can generally take them down far easier. I only consider a few people a "hard fight". (It even makes me cringe watching most youtubers PvP...which is kinda sad. I dunno, I'm just really bothered when in my mind I have to go "Why didn't he do this!" >.>))

Anyway - more on the topic:

At one point in time, this is what MCSG was...mobs at night, large maps, long games, not a whole lot of food, hunting animals for it...this was the days of SG1, when it was the only map, alongside SG2. What happened is that, well, the community didn't like it as much as they do what we are today, sadly.

The community voted for mobs to stay or go about 50-50
The community votes for the small maps, SG4 and Breeze, almost every time...

That's what we are doing here at MCSG. We are listening to the community and making changes accordingly. The problem is that not everyone will agree. Some people probably came here for what you want it to be more like, but sadly, you have the rest of the community to blame for that, not us...if we are to continue keeping the server running and popular, we just have to keep doing just that - changing things in a way that some people may not like.

This doesn't mean we aren't willing to make compromises, though...some maps still do have mobs for hunting, just not hostile ones, and the voting system will be getting a change soon to prevent it always being SG4 and Breeze, even though the majority still loves it - that's just a few examples...but wait until the 48 player servers come around - I doubt you'll see Breeze and SG4 on there, more players means more early action, which will die off into that long first night, searching for food...I think the 48 player servers might be what you're looking for. :p Not just that though, but all of MCSGv2 should bring along many, many changes. Even I'm not aware of what these changes will be, aside from the leaked ones among the forums...we'll see what happens then.

I read that long post :D

Maybe you know, when MCSGv2 comes out?
