But as Theoreitcal says it takes practice, i wouldn't recomend using the block and hit strategy while you are getting into pvp as you should learn the basics first, but i can give you some tips to speed up the process
Learn to strafe. This means getting on the side of your opponent making it harder for him to hit you and you can easily get behind him and get in a few hits on him.
Never go backwards in a fight. If you are backpadeling(going backwards) and your opponent is moving towards you he can hit you when you can't so always keep moving at him and if you need to run from him, try to run past him, don't turn around and run exept you got some distance on him.
Learn to use the bow. The bow is a great weapon to even out a fight with a guy who has better armor than you or better weapon. It does four and a half heart of damage to a enemy without any armor when fully charged and still hurts for a player in good armor aswell.
When in water go under them. If you're in the water or climbing vines it's the same rule as i mentioned earlier with the guy going backwards being hit while he can't hit back, but in water the guy who is under the opponent will be able to hit him while the guy on top can't. Check out this video of mine, it's for taking out teams, but also goes over water fighting:
Armor is key. When you are thinking about getting into a fight with someone compare your armor to his armor. If you have better armor and a decent weapon(Stone sword or higher) you can consider attacking. A guy in full iron armor and a wooden sword is more of a threat than a guy in no armor with a diamond sword.
Experience. As you play more you learn more and will eventually become better and better. I can tell you this, map 1 is being played most of the time so try to learn that and where to go to have an advantage in fights. And i almost forgot, but by the end of this week i will have my map 1 complete walkthrough out wich will cover how to know where you are on the map, where chests are and opening routes, worth checking out
