What is the point of keeping arrows in your hotbar? To keep track, just take a quick glance at your inventory before fighting and account accordingly for each arrow you shoot/pickup. That extra space could be used for something that would effectively help in combat.

If I had anything else I needed in my hotbar for combat, it would be there in place of one of the food. I have the slot, might as well use it for arrows.

To be honest, I used to feel the same way about it as you. However, I've found myself so engrossed in a fight that, if I don't have a lot of arrows, I will come across a time that I don't know if I have arrows or not. This either requires me to stop and get hit by my opponent to check, or attempt to 180 bowshot without an arrow and failing, both of these involving taking a hit.

SLOT 7- Steak/Pork/Whatever cooked food
