Earlier I was told that to install optifine, I had to right click the file and open it with java. Only one problem: I right clicked it, and NOTHING HAPPENED. Should I try getting a completely different computer?

I don't see a reason to completely replace your computer. Best thing to do is try and download a different version of optifine since that version you tried to install may not be working.

I clicked open just after it finished downloading. THAT'S when problems started How do I get it to this point in the first place?

Look in your download folder

you need to download the Java file thing.
from where idk.
a YouTuber "Nics Games" or soemthing like that explains In Detail how to get it...

If java wasn't an option try opening with>find a program to open with> then go into program files (x86)> then java> go into the newest folder> then go into bin> and find java.exe. Double click on it and run optifine with that. If you do not have java.exe in your bin folder or you do not have a java folder, (re)install java.
