Use 1-4 with your fingers.

Scroll for everything else.

You hotkey so you can use keys faster, and if you keep sword, bow, fns, and rod in the first 4 slots in any order, they're the only things you really need to hotbar for anyways.

As for the original poster, try using your ring finger on sprint, you will be able to reach probably more keys.

In response to the OP (OP Means Original Post or Original Poster, right? I never figured that out.)
Make sure your hotbar is organized in a manner that you know which buttons you need to press for which item. Example, 1 = sword, 2 = bow. Personally, I only do 1 for sword, and I scroll for the rest, because I just don't find that I need to do much else. I can hit someone with a fishing rod, quickly tap 1, and start swinging away, all the while sprinting because my pinky only left my sprint key for a split second.
