I was fighting a guy with full iron and iron sword I had leather and a bit of gold armour and stone sword I used my fishing rod to knock him off balance hit him 3 times whist I got hit once and kept doing that same tactic and killed him. So what I am trying to say is when you see a fishing rod in a chest TAKE IT!

They usually are completely aware of their demise, but since they have so sword/low-powered sword, they hope and pray the fishing rod does something.
