I now prefer using my fists over any sword lol, is it a glitch that the fists are so powerful??

Yeah lol. Once i preferred using a fist over a diamond sword in DM and i won 2 games in a row

A friend of mine nearly got kicked/banned for "exploiting" this glitch, even though he didn't know what it was.

I wouldn't recommend abusing it
