I know there is a way to prevent your fishing rod from breaking, I don't see it in the rules, so can a staff member tell me if it's allowed or not?

If its the "trick" where you switch between items to save it from breaking, yes, it is allowed. It doesn't really affect gameplay, and is something everyone has access to.
