I completely agree, right now it is all about who has the best route, and who gets the tier 2's first. It should be random chest locations and random tiers. Here are some things that need to be done to make MCSG more survival based:
Less food. Having mass amounts of food is just boring. There should be way less food. Right now there is no need for a bowl as compared to before in V1 if you had a bow, you had an unlimited source of food. But now without the bowl I find myself with an unlimited source of food. I remember before V2 I would starve to death and actually think in a strategically about how much food I ate. You would also starve to death at times. I want it to go back to where you had to kill animals for food to be able to survive or actually pick up mushroom. We should also sometimes actually have to fish for food and not just for xp. The amount of food should definitely be decreased, because at the moment it is way to easy to survive.
We need less arrows. There have already been many threads about arrows, but I'm going to post my opinions here. So, the amount of arrows is too damn high!

We need the amount decreased, just like food. There should only be 1 or two arrows in tier 1 chests and 4 at the most in tier 2's. At deathmatch in every game I should have no more then 20 arrows. I have had more than 2 stacks of 64 arrows in a single game before, that is just crazy. Having that many arrows is just stupid and unfair to your opponent. Almost everyone agrees that the amount of arrows is just insane and they have to lower it.
String instead of bows and fishing rods. I think that bows and fishing rods should be replaced with string in chests. Why? Because it adds more strategic decisions. For example if you only have 3 string, but you are not sure whether or not you want to craft a fishing rod or a bow. With the fishing rod you could use the fishing rod technique to beat your opponent, but with the bow you would have the long range advantage.
Diamond have to be more rare. At the moment diamonds are too common. I do not think that every game game I play that someone should have a diamond sword. It just makes it too easy. IMO every 2/5 should have a diamond sword in them. I want to see more deathmatch's with iron and stone swords.
All the things stated above will make MCSG harder, because at the moment it is way too easy, and it doesn't make it fun. Every game is the same. These ideas will also make MCSG more survival based rather than more PvP based. IMO right now these games are more "Minecraft PvP Games" and less "Minecraft Survival Games".
