If you're having trouble finding routes I suggest watching Blamph's youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/Blamphe as he shows many good routes for the maps so you won't get lost

I might be missing something but when I was playing I tried to chop some trees to get wood but I couldn't. How do you go about getting items. Are they only found in chests?

The only items you find are in chests. Look for landmarks on the map that you think would have lot's of chests in them.
