im still pretty new to the whole SG thing and i find that im losing alot of fights that, in my opinion, i shouldnt. im just curious if axes have a shorter reach than a sword. it seems, from my end at least, that my opponet is able to hit me from much further away than i can hit them.

The hit box is a tricky thing.
If your are under someone you have a larger hitbox than them. If in a face to face battle, your hits can get timed so that when your sword actually hits, he has hit you and knocked you back away from him. This used to happen a lot to me when I was new, I found out moving and jumping while fighting is a good thing to confuse the enemy, and it also can prevent the no hit thing. Having an organized hotbar always helps me fight, and using the terrain to my advantage. In a thin tunnel dodging around a flint and steel wont work, they have to stop.
And in a building get behind a desk or peek out from a wall, it will make it harder for them to hit you.
That all I have time to write, goodbye.
XD
And axes and swords have the same reach. Axes dont have block hitting.

Since Minecraft PVP basically sucks the chrome of a '57 Chevy Bumper, fights in Minecraft are sometimes stacked against somebody else, but not for the defeated players fault:

This includes, but not limited to...

- A player being hit far back enough, so where the enemy can keep hitting them, even without the enemy receiving any hits that the attacked player is trying to give them.

- Hitboxes being larger when under somebody, which is extremely random even for Minecraft.

- Ice PVP having nothing but chance involved, since movement hits are 99% of the time undetected by the hitbox.

The most common, and probably most relevant to your situation, is the Hitbox one. Yes, if you're below a player that's on high ground, your range will be farther than their's. But I believe that is the only increase that you get in sword/axe range in Minecraft, and I don't believe there are any decreases.
