Why does /ping not work?

Why does /ping not work? It was really useful and helped out a lot of people. Did MC Gamer remove it because it was not accurate?

Devs removed it a long time ago, because it was reading too inaccurate for mostly everyone.

Devs removed it a long time ago, because it was reading too inaccurate for mostly everyone.

In addition to this, apparently there was a glitch in 1.8 that interfered with the way the command worked.
