Why does everyone put # before there clan name, IMO its ugly and annoying. Whats your thoughts?

Omg so annoying. I asked a random why he put a hash tag before addressing Phoenix, he said "because it's a clan duh"

I think it's because on like Twitter ( Where the use of # that way originates ). Its like saying you are a part of that group ( Ex : #ThugLife, and all that stupid stuff.)
