As a gamemaker for the Hell Games, I have quite a bit to say on this subject, especially being present and observing what goes on in almost every Hell Games there has been.
After each one of the games, a lot of complaints crop up. As Blaze said, the main complaint is fair fight/who was 'supposed' to win. The Hell Games aren't meant to be fair, though we try to keep it as fair as we can. These aren't Games to try to find out who is the most skillful. There is luck, situation, and choice also added to the equation. In the actual Hunger Games, Peeta didn't do much except for getting a broken leg and lying in mud (aka camping). Katniss would have died in/after the fires in the pine forest from her burns had there not been intervention from Haymitch. Heck, all of the Mutts were released in an attempt to kill someone. Since MCSG isn't really about being exactly like the books, the Hell Games is taking a stab at it. If we are violently pouring mobs and TnT on someone, it's for a reason (like ant and Sixo, it was to get them out of the cornucopia). If they move, they usually are able to survive. Protip: try not to camp when you're decked, the Gamemakers don't like that.
Also, Hell Games has pretty much been in a form of 'Beta', especially HG 1,2, and 3. There are problems in Beta games, problems that get fixed and help to make the game better. Unfair deaths through lag/lava were a problem, and we tried to fix that. The Gamemakers were, believe it or not, more OP in HG 1, with the power to pour lava, light fires, and spawn horrible creatures. I trapped someone and nearly drowned them to death in a mine in the first one (because they were breaking some rules), but they didn't die. Rings of lava were placed to try to deter people's ventures and exploits, and a lot of lag and death ensued. We've been nerfed since then.
We barely ever select the same people every time, especially as of late.
When people do die unfairly, and talk to us about it, if we deem it worthy we give them a second chance in the games. That leads to people complaining that some people get let into the games multiple times in a row. Our fixing one problem has lead to another one.
TL;DR: The Hell Games isn't entirely about skill, it's about survival. If you survive our trials, you are worthy. There are some problems, but we do our best to fix them. You're kind of supposed to get 'screwed'. If you can survive in leather armor by wandering around the map, you can win the Hell Games just like a team of two who had taken corn.
